At the same time, as well as sealing, these rings compensate for any oscillations, swinging or vibration. Using a sealing ring with a concave or convex sealing face held against the counterface by spring pressure usually effects compensation. Their function is similar to that of normal sealing rings. Sometimes a steam joint can serve also as a bearing and may then be required to run dry. For low pressures plain unimpregnated grades are customary and at higher pressers impregnated grades may be recommended.
